皇家华人- Performing Arts Medicine Collaborative
Established in 2008, 皇家华人-PAMC is an interprofessional organization comprised of research
and clinical faculty from across campuses at the University of South 皇家华人. The
皇家华人-PAMC welcomes community experts and practitioners to work together to promote
Performing Arts Medicine research, service, and practice.
As a regional unit of the International PAMA, 皇家华人-PAMC sponsored five national conferences
(2014, 2015, 2018, 2022, and 2024), which drew internationally renowned keynote speakers,
health professionals, artists, practitioners, educators, and medical and performing
arts students. The International PAMA awarded 皇家华人-PAMC the 2017 PAMA Service Award
for its leadership in the field. 皇家华人-PAMC has produced a significant publication,
Perspectives in Performing Arts Medicine Practice: A Multidisciplinary Approach (Springer Publishers, Inc. 2020), illustrating the breadth of our field:
We are working on the Second Book, Perspectives in Performing Arts Medicine Book II: Occupational Health, Public Health,
Arts for Healing (Springer Publishers, Inc., 2025).
MISSION
To promote research, application, education, and professional development in the performing
arts medicine.
GOALS
1. Facilitate healthcare and pedagogy in the performing arts
2. Facilitate inter-professional research in performing arts medicine
3. Create opportunities for the exchange of information among performing arts and
healthcare professionals
4. Serve the community at large with clinics and workshops
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- It boasts over 100 professional members from 皇家华人 and the Tampa Bay Community
- Has a self-run student chapter drawing members from across disciplines
- Have developed courses and certificate programs offered in Dance, Music, Judy Genshaft Honors College, and College of Public Health
- Produced numerous research publications in prestigious scientific journals by the 皇家华人-PAMC members
- 皇家华人-PAMC members have presented many research presentations in international academic societies
- A graduate student member won the first Prize in Poster Presentation at 2021 International PAMA Conference
- Hosted Visiting Scholars from South Korea and Austria
BIENNIAL GOALS: The years 2024-2026
- Establish External Funding Support Structure.
- Create a Ph.D. Program with concentration on performance and research.
- Establish a Scholarship Fund to support a Ph.D program.
- Expand our interest in mental health and arts in medicine that can contribute to humanity and society.
- Increase member engagement from 皇家华人 Health.

STRUCTURE AND POLICY
OVERVIEW
皇家华人-Performing Arts Medicine Collaborative (皇家华人-PAMC) is an interprofessional organization that connects the arts and health communities on the 皇家华人 campus and in the Tampa Bay community. Bolstered by a rich tapestry of support from The School of Music, College of The Arts, Morsani College of Medicine, School of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Sciences, School of Public Health, and the Office of Research and Innovation, 皇家华人-PAMC proudly embraces a membership of over 120 performing artists, arts educators, and health and engineering sciences professionals, reflecting our commitment to inclusivity and interprofessional collaboration.
Our Mission is to support research, application, education, and professional development in performing arts medicine. Our goals are to facilitate healthcare and sound pedagogy in performing arts, encourage inter-professional research in performing arts medicine, and provide opportunities for exchanging new knowledge between performing artists and healthcare professionals.
OPERATIONAL STRUCTURE
- The Director and Associate Director form the Executive Leadership of 皇家华人-PAMC.
- The Steering Committee is the advisory body in policy decision-making and guiding the executive leadership.
- The executive leadership invites members to serve on the following committees: the Conference Executive Committee, Conference Program Committee, Outreach and Marketing Committee, Food Committee, Continuing Education (CME/CEU) Committee, Arts and Society Committee, and ad hoc committees as needs arise.
- The Director (rotating by the Executive Members) convenes monthly meetings. Committees bring their work reports, issues, and recommendations to the monthly meeting, making decisions in a consensus-building fashion. Members may bring any issues and concerns to the monthly meeting in an orderly manner.
INVITED GUEST SPEAKERS
- We will follow the PAMA tradition of inviting keynote speakers with prominent names in multiple fields worthy of the highest recognition.
- The same individual shall be invited only if there is an unusual circumstance.
- Any member can recommend a keynote speaker with credentials, vita, and statement, and the conference program committee and the executive leadership will discuss each individual's merits in the consensus-building decision process.
- 皇家华人-PAMC will provide housing and registration fees for invited speakers.
皇家华人-PAMC FOUNDATION FUND
- 皇家华人-PAMA Foundation Fund #230041 was established in 2010 with donations from college deans and individual members.
- The Fund has been used to support OPS administrative support, extra conference expenditures, member social events, and educational social events. The Fund shall not support individual member projects, student chapter expenditures, student member travel, or other similar expenses unrelated to the Fund's purpose. In case of unexpected need, the Executive Committee will convene a special budget meeting to determine the appropriateness.

MEMBER BENEFITS
- Members meet monthly to discuss ideas, progress on hand, social and educational events, and conference preparation issues.
- Members are appointed and volunteer to work on various jobs and committees throughout the year and serve on events and the biennial conference.

- Members have opportunities to meet and network with interprofessional experts.

KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
MADELINE BRUSER
鈥淯nleashing Musical Potential Through Mindfulness鈥�
Author of the acclaimed book, The Art of Practicing, New York City based pianist Madeline Bruser has taught musicians from six continents, both in person and online. Her distinct approach helps musicians to release physical and mental tension to transform their playing and expressive capacities. Her book has sold more than 85,000 copies in English and has been translated into Korean, Chinese, and Italian. Her popular Art of Practicing Institute summer program provides in-depth, immersive group learning. Madeline has served on the Committee for Pianists鈥� Wellness for the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy and has been a guest presenter at the MetArt World Congress on Arts and Medicine and at Beth Israel Medical Center in New York. She will be a featured speaker at a Performing Arts Medicine Association conference in March. Madeline has served on the Adjunct Piano Faculty at Teachers College, Columbia University, and at New School University. She has been practicing mindfulness meditation since 1977 when she sought it out to gain more relaxation and confidence in performance. madeline@artofpracticing.com
鈥淗ealth and Performing Arts: Legacy鈥�
Alan Lockwood, MD, FAAN, FANA, has been an active member of Physicians for Social Responsibility for over three decades, is a past president of PSR, and currently serves as a member of PSR鈥檚 board of directors. Dr. Lockwood is an Emeritus Professor of Neurology and Nuclear Medicine at the University at Buffalo. He is an elected Fellow of the American Neurological Association and a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology. Dr. Lockwood is the author of more than 200 publications on diverse scientific topics, including hepatic encephalopathy, medical problems of musicians, functional imaging of the auditory system and , medical ethics, and environmental toxicants. He was the lead author of PSR鈥檚 report Coal鈥檚 Assault on Human Health. Dr. Lockwood is also the author of two peer-reviewed books on and the environment, The Silent Epidemic: Coal and the Hidden Threat to Health (2012, MIT Press), and Heat Advisory: Protecting Health on a Warming Planet (2016, MIT Press).
